Great article, def. But another thing i think you should put up there is finding a PVP oriented guild. I think that's the best way to learn about pvp -by playing with people who know what they're doing and are willing to teach (players are much more lenient with guildies than pugs by far)

first step: teach PvE scrubs how to use a friend list and stop bitching about not being able to find a group. no one cares that much about rank.

oh.... playing RA is a really bad way to introduce people to pvp... possibly even worse than playing PvE.

TS voice quality is horrible.
Also Vent has setup to "counter" those annoying sounds.

i lied about my rank when i was like r3 to get in good groups. i turned rank four in one of fritos groups and he started raging lol.
but i was leet so its all good. so basically, lie. i lied about my rank and met a guy (sektor he posted earlier) and ended up joining my first pvp guild. we rocked gvg, got r20 then the guild got banned cause it was offensive >.< (Rentally Metarded [iDum]) but anyways, good post. i find it funny that despite the countless "how to start playing heroes ascent" threads people still whine and complain that they cant get into groups...even though thats because of rank discriminating people like me

Acctually, Dryder has the answer to being good at HA, or any pvp for that matter.

But really, here is the best advice ever. Don't listen to the people who say rank doesn't matter. Don't listen to the people who say people dont care about rank. Whoever told you this isn't very good at Guild Wars PvP.

And as we can see it only takes 1 idiot to distroy a great thread.

Thanks a bunch for your stunning and insightful words crucifix.

Its people like you that really make others want to PvP.

Back on topic:
I think this thread was a great way to help out PvE players to understand some of what it takes to make it in HA. I only wish there were more players like Tiyuri and others (with knowledgeable comments in this thread) who are willing to take the time to try and help the PvE players give PvP a try. But, as always there has to be someone, make a stupid statement that makes them not want to give it a try.

Thanks Tiyuri for this great guide it is very informative and hopefully will help many others to join or at least give PvP a try.

I encourage natural talent and the ability to understand the meta game of the pvp scene, be it HA or GvG's. RA is a n absolute shit place to learn how to pvp. It's full of other idiots that have bad build beating up on you with an even worse build. see, i don't mind pve players coming to pvp if they don't suck. The problem arises when 9times out of ten, they blow. I'll always try someone in a group if they have the right bar (or damn close) and... well.. arent assbags about playing. I HATE when pve kids, that have NO elementary understanding of pvp, come crashing in expecting to instantly get into an HA group or a pvp guild. All that comes of that is bitching and moaning on the part of said scrub, thus turning another one away.

See... the point is that unless you are intelligent enough to look into what pvp is before you start doing it, just stay away. Idiots need to stay the hell out of that part of the game. the worst part, is that even with sites like this and wiki, people still suck. things are made super obvious and players are still to damn dumb to realize these obvious things. if people have questions, post them here, but don't go bitching about how bad rank discrimination is. you are probably getting discriminated because you suck, not because you have low rank.

IF PUSH COMES TO SHOVE: make some friends, play with them, get a core group of HA'ers going and turn yourselves into a pvp guild. there is nothing wrong with recruitment as long as you play together and don't suck as a team. I have been playing this game for 11 months, 5 of those were me being constantly afk and/ or playing other games. I missed the big HA boom of players, hence why im only r6. In the entire 11 month age of my account, ive played a little over 2700 hours, 3/4 of that time from pvping. My start in pvp was NOT because i got in when the time was nigh, it was because when i started playing, I cared enough to learn the game and not just throw myself in and expect to succeed. Sure i played with low/rankless groups, but they were groups of friends that i had wanted to include in pvping also.

All this bitching and moaning about rank discrimination, guess what, its your own problem, if you expect to get into an r9+ group and you've never HA'd before, go back to PvE and leave the rest of us alone.

krat: its people that whine like you that give pve scrubs their bad name.

I would like to point out that you shouldn't pvp at all if you're an idiot.

As much as I hate HA, you made a pretty nice thread. I hope new players take something from it.

good, except another option is to join a Guild which does HA, and has a few ranked players, and see if they don't mind taking you out for a run, thats how I started building my first few fame points

1st: I care about rank, I try to get same ranked people or higher people to get in my HA team... If I get them on vent and they sound really stupid or they are just quiet qause tehy don't know what to say then u get the straight kick cause I like to have plaers you interact with.

2nd: Stupid, very stupid comment about the RA. RA is best to introduce people to PvP... Here you find out the you can't aggro people much as a Wammo with mending/healing breeze... You actually see people run out of Meteor Showers instead of standing in it like in PvE... And you actually see that some people can kill you in under 5 seconds and that you face 4 entirely different builds(which is likely, ofcourse you sometimes get builds that look alike or are the same, example SF and Thumpers where hot for a while) instead of for example 4 Mountain Trolls with the exact same skillbar... So RA is the perfect introduction...

I have nothing to comment about the guide, its very useful and you did a great job

I find RA best for taking a HA build that you havn't tried before and testing it out. No one really cares if you are not good with it because the game will end in a few min.

of course this doesnt work too well for spikes but you can still use it lol.

I have found TA to be full of more idiots then RA sadly... If you do go TA go with a guild, dont go with a pug unless they are very organized (which is rare).

Nice article, I will certainly take this information with me when going for PvP. I've recently started doing some RA and TA. I'm having lots of fun and keep learning new things every battle. Once again, very informative article.

Although I'm mainly a PvE player, I have always been very interested in the PvP part of Guild Wars. Probably because I heard that it was so good.

Greetings TeeJay

Very true, don't limit yourself to one gimmick, as that makes you look pretty nooby and make people think all you can do is play gimmicks.

Yeah, unless I'm really getting sick of losing UW every first match, I usually operate under a r3+ recommended, suck=kick policy. I don't care if you're r9--if you suck you get kicked. Probably got that r9 by doing IWAY and rspike anyways.

While the statement about a lot of r9+ players wanting to play new innovative builds is not entirely true (actually most of them I've seen lately just want to farm easy fame with new gimmicks), as you go up the ranks there's less of a chance of playing the same gimmicks.

Overall, I'd have to say this is a VERY nice article on getting new people to play HA and competitive PvP.

no, just no. gimmicks rock, thats why they do well in halls. I'd hate to break it to you, but gimmicks run in HA because they are just good builds. rspike for example: its all around a fantastic build, your spike rotation is every 4 seconds, and you can play defensively on altars with interrupts.

bspike was just rockin also. spike skills, and a team of 6 pseudo monks. if it was run well, it could take many many balanced groups. HA is so much fun because of how well gimmicks work. people that insult others because they play gimmicks either a) suck too much to beat them or b) suck too much to get in a high ranked gimmick group, or the rare c) can run a good balance and not get beat by spike for example. what wins halls now? its not balanced bro. spiritway, jagged, and somw. Now im not knocking balanced groups, i like running balanced groups, but even if you run a balance, there are still gimmicky skills taken to cope with gimmick builds.

there are only 2 gimmick build that really blow overall. that is IWAY and SF.

Nice thread. It is a good way to give some directions for the newbies.

I would like to add a few more suggestions so newcomer can watch out for.

1. Do not add me to join group when we didn't ask for you first.

This is one of those very ignoring things that always happen in HA. You can rather PM players like me and ask nicely if we need someone.

2. Do not tell me you don't have this or that.

Another ignoring thing is when we ask you to have this skill. We want this skill, not something else. Don't tell people your build rocks. You work for the team, not yourself.

3. If you are attacker, don't over extended getting kill. If you are healer, don't just stand there getting hit.

Need I say more about this? Common sense.

4. Add friends/buddies.

Once you have a good group, add them as friends and play with them again. After awhile, you will build up a group of PvP friends on the list.

Use Vent. Screw TS.

Im new to HA since i have stuck to RA and TA since i got the game, so i have a question. If someone you were in a group with gets mad because you make a mistake, boots you from the team after you lose, and harasses you in the HA outpost later to ruin your reputation with other people saying you arent and experienced player and a noob, what should i do? Block him? Dont worry about it and keep trying anyway?

Ignore him, he's an idiot and no one will listen to him anyway.

Good players don't act like that, the people who get anywhere are the people who know how to show other players respect and be a decent human being.
